Finally, the news most Oregon football fans have been waiting for: A team not named the Tennessee Titans interested in acquiring Marcus Mariota.
On Monday, NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo reported that the former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2015 NFL Draft could be on his way to the Las Vegas Raiders.
The #Raiders are pushing to close out a deal with QB Marcus Mariota, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Mike Mayock's No. 1-ranked QB in his @nflnetwork coverage leading up to the 2015 Draft could soon be on his roster.— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 17, 2020
And later, news came down the deal was done:
With Tennessee, Mariota started in 63 games with a 29-32 record. After playing just seven games and a 2-4 record in 2019, the Titans benched Mariota for Ryan Tannehill.
Tannehill signed a 4-year, $118 million dollar contract to remain in Tennessee on Monday.
Garafalo previously reported that the Raiders were looking to add a veteran 1B quarterback to play behind Derek Carr.
On NFL NOW, @MikeGarafolo says the Raiders are interested in Mariota. Reports they are more likely to go after a veteran 1B backup like Mariota than Brady.— Gregg Rosenthal (@greggrosenthal) March 6, 2020
The former Duck still has a lot to give to the NFL, as most Oregon football fans know.
Are the Raiders the team to do just that? Is Raiders head coach Jon Gruden the coach to unleash Mariota?
More to come on this topic.
