It is difficult and near impossible to forget the tragic events that occurred on January 26, 2020.
The passing of Kobe Bryant, Gigi Bryant, and seven other passengers didn’t just strike a chord in the sports world, but across the world from sea to sea. It was an especially difficult time for Sabrina Ionescu.
During Ionescu’s four-year career at Oregon, she developed a relationship on a basketball level and personal level with the Bryant family. Kobe was her mentor and she passed her knowledge along to Kobe’s daughters.
Ionescu dedicated the rest of the season to Kobe. After a historic career at Oregon, Ionescu was drafted No. 1 overall by the New York Liberty in the 2020 WNBA Draft and earned her master's degree from Oregon. But during this time, her relationship with the Bryant family still remains strong.
