The biggest question heading into this Oregon Football offseason and the 2021 season is who will be the Ducks starting quarterback when non-conference play begins?
Coming into last season, the question was the same: who was the heir to the Justin Herbert throne?
Two-year backup Tyler Shough was named the starter heading into and coming out of spring practice, but Boston College transfer Anthony Brown made for an intriguing competition.
That played out throughout the season and by the end of 2020, we were left with more questions that answers regarding the starter. We were all witnesses to the catastrophe that was the 2021 Playstation Fiesta Bowl, where head coach Mario Cristobal was “riding the hot hand.” It did not work out.
"There was enough clarity to start Tyler, which is what we did, but there was also enough... good play by Anthony to where we felt it merited him playing and that's what we did," said Cristobal following the loss.
It was chaotic and proved the saying "when you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterback."
Now, that same competition is back for 2021 and even better with incoming five-star freshman quarterback Ty Thompson now in the mix.
After Brown announced his return to Oregon in 2021, we posed this question with a Twitter poll:
“With Anthony Brown coming back to Oregon in 2021, who do you think will start at QB in Wk. 1???”
Here are the results.
Over half of the fans who voted want to see Brown taking first team reps when non-conference play begins next season. Should the Ducks give him the chance to do so? Or are they one year too late and will decide to give Shough a chance for redemption after leaving the Fiesta Bowl on a sour note?
Something to keep an eye on this offseason.
