The Beavers will get their chance to compete with the best of the best.
Oregon State hosts Team USA on November 4th at Gill Coliseum in an exhibition game. Corvallis is the second stop of four as a part of Team USA’s training camp: Stanford, Texas A&M and Oregon.
The Beavers enter the season with national championship aspirations. Despite being picked to finish third in the preseason Pac-12 media poll, the AP Poll still ranked the Beavers seventh in the nation. They’ll look to test themselves ahead of the regular season tipping off soon.
Beaver coach Scott Rueck joined the Talkin’ Beavers Podcast to preview the match up:
You’re getting your players ready to play against the best to ever do it...It’s a game but even more than that it’s an event. You’re bringing in a group of hall of famers into Gill [Coliseum] to play...
While Rueck anticipates to coach against WNBA Coach Dawn Staley, he also looks forward to the experience for his players.
It’s hard for me to even imagine to be honest, I don’t exactly know what it’s going to be like for them. I know it’s going to be one of those moments they’ll just never forget. It will feel a bit out of body.
Team USA will field a roster full of WNBA talent such as Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Skylar Diggins-Smith (Dallas Wings) and A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces).
I’ve joked [that] sometime during warm up [we need to] just stand there and look over there and just get over it. It’s like ‘that’s them and this is really happening, we’re going to get to play against them.’
The Beavers will also field some potential-WNBA players, highlighted by senior Mikayla Pivec who’s coming off of All-Pac 12 honors and an All-American honorable mention. She’ll get her chance to prove herself against other professionals heading into her final collegiate season.
The game tips off at 7 p.m. (PT) at Gill Coliseum on Monday, November 4th.
