Beavers' Midseason Report Card
Midseason Report Card
I don't think its a shock the Beavers are halfway through the 2019 season with a record of 2-4. I think what might be a little surprising is the fact they are so close to being 4-2. Yeah, the Utah game was a debacle. But that was the exception. In fact, Cal coach Justin Wilcox called the 52-7 loss to the Utes an " anomaly."
So what are fair grades for the Beaver Football team halfway through the 2019 season?
They average 32.0 points per game. That 50th in the 130 team FBS. The defense is giving up 34.0 ppg which is 114th out of 130. Both are better than last year. Now let's get out the report card after six games.
Oregon State Offense
No doubt the Beaver offense is solid. They have kept the Beavs in a couple of games that were impressive but lack of consistency hurt them against Hawaii and Stanford. Just two turnovers in six games is impressive.
OVERALL GRADE: B
There is no doubt Jim Michalczik's offensive line is a bright spot on the Oregon State team. Blake Brandel and Gus Lavaka have been playing some of their best football. Nous Keobounnam has filled in for Nathan Eldridge center and has had a great season so far. The youthful right side had a pretty big bump in the road against Utah but otherwise show promise.
This group started off slow. The main feature of the Tight Ends early in the season was blocking and they did a good job. Finally in the past couple of games Noah Togiai has been much more visible. He now has 17 catches for 121 yards. Luke Musgrave, the freshman from Bend has two catches and Teagan Quitoriano has the one catch for a 27-yard TD against UCLA.
OVERALL GRADE: C+
This is a real strength of the 2019 Beavers. The running game is averaging 5.3 yards per carry this season. Let's break down the RB's individually.
ARTAVIS PIERCE: He is by far having a tremendous season. 74 carries 503 yards and five touchdowns. 6.8 yards per carry.
OVERALL GRADE: A
JERMAR JEFFERSON: Started out strong but injuries have slowed his progress. He has carried the ball 56 times for 296 yards and a TD.
OVERALL GRADE: INCOMPLETE
The other running backs B.J Baylor and Calvin Tyler Jur have made good contributions.
OVERALL RUNNING BACK GRADE : B+
Isaiah Hodgins has been one of the elite receivers in the nation.
51 catches 709 yards. An impressive 13.9 yards per catch and 9 Touchdowns
Champ Flemings and Kolby Taylor have both made big plays for Brian Lindgren
This defense is better than last year's but still is giving up too many yards. On the ground 205.7 per game. In the air, 245.3 per game. That is 80 yards less per game than last season. The Utah game really skewed what was a much better look on paper.
OVERALL GRADE: C-
The ability to stuff the run is better in 2019 but the defensive push isn't there yet. Tackles for loss are up and the tackling is improved. I would like to see the linemen get their hands up more to deflect the opposing Quarterback's passes more. Elu Aydon is having a good senior season. The loss of Jeremy Reichner
in camp was a big loss
OVERALL GRADE: C
By far the strongest group of the Beaver Defense. Hamilcar Rashed Junior deserves an A for his effort. Six sacks and ten tackles for loss. Avery Roberts is also making an impact with two sacks. Team Captain Andzrej Hughes-Murray was lost for the season early and that was a setback.. Overall this group has worked hard.Shermar Smith has been a workhorse for Tim Tibesar and is the teams leading tackler with 37.
OVERALL GRADE: B
Jalen Moore's annoying hamstring injury has really hurt the depth of this group.
His return against Utah was encouraging. Shaun Wilson has 29 tackles and an interception. But too many easy touchdowns for opponents in 2019 tells me this is a young group and a work in progress. I don't want to be a harsh grader but perhaps a tough love grade will help.
This group is all over the place. Daniel Rodriguez has been a good punter and his awesome drop kick against UCLA (The NCAA says it was illegal) will go down in Beaver lore for its creativity. Rodriguez kicks the ball deep and has good hang time.
OVERALL GRADE: B+
Jordan Choukair is 23 for 24 on PAT's but just 2 for 6 on Field Goals. Coach Jonathan Smith has opened up the job this week and we will see if the job goes to Everett Hayes or can Choukair retain it.
OVERALL GRADE: C-/D+
The second half of the season starts Saturday in Berkeley. Let's see if the Offense, Defense and Special teams can continue to improve!
