The Oregon State Beavers were dealt a blow Wednesday when head coach Jonathan Smith said quarterback Tristan Gebbia’s season is likely over after sustaining a late-game hamstring injury against the Oregon Ducks.

Gebbia sustained the injury while trying to rush the ball in from the one-inch line. He was unable to finish the game.

Back-up quarterback Chance Nolan, who normally operates out of the shotgun, took his first collegiate snap under center to sneak the ball past the goal line and score what was the deciding touchdown.

“Chance Nolan goes in for his first play — probably the biggest play of the game — and he gets it done,” Smith said after the Beavers 41-38 win over Oregon.

Now, he’ll have to get it done over four quarters.

Chance Nolan was the 2nd highest recruit for the Beavs in 2020. Prior to committing to the Beavs, Nolan spent a redshirt season with Middle Tennessee State University. He left after one year and went closer to home, playing at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California.

There, he guided the Gauchos to a 9-2 record as a redshirt freshman. Passed for 3,315 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also led Saddleback with 1,069 yards rushing and scored six touchdowns on the ground. Nolan finished the 2019 season with 4,384 yards of total offense, which broke Saddleback's school record set in 2013 (4,315, Tim Belman).

He was named the National Division Southern League Most Valuable Player in 2019.

Designated a pro-stye quarterback, Nolan had offers from New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, San Diego State, UCLA, and Utah among others.

The redshirt sophomore was the No. 1 JUCO pro-style quarterback in 2020.

"The town of Corvallis is awesome and I can see the good things Coach Smith is doing for the program,” Nolan told BeaverBlitz after his commitment. “I loved the talks I had with the staff and feel that it was the best fit for me."

Chance Nolan will officially get his first start this Saturday against the Utah Utes (0-2).

Utah is still looking for its first win of the season after falling to USC and Washington in their last two games.

The Utes also missed their first two games of the year due to COVID-19 related issues.

Nolan will have his hands full with a team hunger to get just a single win in the column for this season.

With the help of running back Jermar Jefferson, who ranks second in the nation with 168.75 rushing yards per game, Nolan could hopefully get his first win as a starter for the Beavers on Saturday.
