It was a disappointing evening in Gill Coliseum as the No. 15 Oregon State Beavers (3-1, 1-1) lost their first game of the season, falling to unranked Utah (1-1, 1-1) 85-79 at home.
Sophomore guard Brynna Maxwell lit up the Beavers defense, scoring 34 points on 10-15 from the field, including 4-7 from beyond the arc.
The Beavers jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first quarter, including five points from Sasha Goforth but Oregon State led after the first quarter by just four points, 24-20.
Then, over the next quarter and a half, Utah outscored the Beavers 23-9 to take a 43-33 lead in the third quarter. The Beavers would come back to close the deficit to trail by just six heading into the fourth quarter, 59-53.
Oregon State began the fourth quarter on a 13-6 run behind eight points from senior Aleah Goodman, one three-pointer, a three-point play the hard way and another lay-in, to take a 66-65 lead with 6:41 left in the contest. Goodman finished the game leading Oregon State in scoring with 20 points on 7-10 from the field, 5-7 from three-point range.
After two points from the free-throw line from Sasha Goforth, Utah finished the game on a 20-11 run to win by six points. Junior guard Dru Gylten had back-to-back jumpers during the run and finished the game with 12 points.
Sophomore Taylor Jones struggled mightily on Tuesday, shooting 1-10 from the field scoring just six points.
Oregon State will look to bounce back against rival No. 8 Oregon (4-0, 2-0), who beat Utah 85-43, on Sunday, December 13th at 4:00 p.m. PT at Gill Coliseum.
