NWSL Challenge Cup goes to Thorns after dramatic penalty shootout


The Portland Thorns are the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup championships are defeating Gotham FC in a penalty kick shootout!

The Thorns set the tone early in the match with an early goal as the Thorns dominated the midfield.

Christine Sinclair scored at the eight-minute mark.

Gotham FC eventually did find the goal to tie it 1-1 towards the end of the second half, while  Portland failed to find the second goal to put it all away as the match came to an end.

Challenge Cup rules meant the match went right from regulation to penalty kicks to determine the winner. 

Of course, the celebration took place after the Thorns took the game away with the winning penalty kick.

Congratulations to the Portland Thorns team for winning the  NWSL Challenge Cup!

The Thorns open the NWSL regular season against the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday at 4pm at Providence Park.
