Portland Thorns FC dismantle Chicago 5-0 in NWSL season opener

If there was any worry of a championship hangover for Portland after winning the 2021 Challenge Cup, those fears were quickly debunked Sunday afternoon.

Thorns FC massacred the Chicago Red Stars in its NWSL regular-season opener at Providence Park Sunday, winning the match 5-0.

Portland scored four goals in the match's first 30 minutes including a near hat-trick from Sophia Smith who made her regular-season debut.

The No. 1 overall pick during the 2020 NWSL College Draft was responsible for three goals, but her first goal was officially counted as own-goal ruining her hat trick.

Portland replaced Smith with Simone Charley in the 62nd minute.

Other goal scorers for the Rose City on Sunday were Christine Sinclair who converted a penalty kick for her 61st career goal with the club and Tyler Lussi in the 72nd minute.

Dating back to the beginning of the 2021 Challenge Cup, the Thorns remain undefeated during the 2021 calendar year.

The 2nd overall pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft, Morgan Weaver, had a pair of assists to Smith in the 16th and 30th minutes.

With performances like this, Portland remains the favorite to win the NWSL Championship this season.

Next, Portland will host rival OL Reign on Sunday, May 23rd at Providence Park. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. PST. on CBS Sports Network.
