For the second straight draft, Portland Thorns FC has made a splash during the NWSL Draft to trade up and acquire talent.
One year after trading up for the top-two picks, Portland sent one international spot (2021), the No. 7 and No. 32 picks in the 2021 NWSL Draft to Chicago to trade up to No. 6 overall and select Texas Christian senior Yazmeen Ryan.
Whether Ryan joins the Thorns immediately or stays with TCU for another season remains to be seen. Players who had played at least three seasons in college were eligible to be drafted in the 2021 NWSL Draft and keep their remaining college eligibility if they decide to, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 5'6" midfielder started all 22 games in 2019 for the Horned Frogs and was named to the 2019 USSCA 1st-Team All-Midwest Region and as well as being named 1st-Team All-Big 12 in 2018 and 2019. TCU finished the fall season ranked No. 3 in the nation.
Ryan ranked second on the team and tied for eighth in the Big 12 with 23 points (7 goals and 9 assists) during 2019.
The newest Thorn has also played for the USWNT U-23 team including as recently as the 2019 Women's International U-23 La Manga Tournament in Spain. She also received an invite to the 2018 USA Soccer U-18 National Team Training Camp.
Ryan suffered an MCL injury last fall but she's seen as someone who can contribute right away, especially as the Thorns lose multiple players due to the Summer Olympics.
