The Portland Timbers may not have gotten the result they desired Wednesday night, but one player still made history.
Diego Valeri scored his 80th career MLS regular-season goal Wednesday in the 92nd minute against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
With the goal, Valeri joined only Landon Donavon (145 goals, 136 assists) and Jaime Moreno (133 goals, 102 assists) in the 80-80 club in MLS History, reserved for players who have recorded 80 goals and 80 assists in MLS regular-season play.
In 219 appearances (208 starts) as a Timber in league play, Valeri has scored 80 goals and 83 assists.
Valeri spoke about the accomplishment after the match.
"In a personal aspect, it is a big satisfaction to achieve that stat," said Valeri. "It says how hard I work for this club and trying to put Portland Timbers in the spot of prestige that it deserves, the club and our supporters. On the individual side, I’m very satisfied about that, it’s something that is not every day, it takes a lot of time and a lot of games, but as I said, it is a feeling of satisfaction and obviously gratitude to my family.”
Next, the Timbers will head north to Seattle to play the Sounders on Sunday, September 6th at 7:00 p.m. PT looking to avenge their 3-0 defeat last month.
