Felipe Mora's game-winner gives Portland Timbers vengeance over rival Seattle Sounders

The Portland Timbers have won their first game since the restart of the MLS regular season with a 2-1 win at CenturyLink Field over heated rival Seattle.

Heading into Sunday, the Timbers had only earned a single point since the regular season restarted following Portland's MLS is Back Tournament championship, allowing eleven goals in three matches.

Among those three matches was a 3-0 thrashing at Providence Park at the hands of Seattle on August 26th. However, the victors were reversed Sunday evening three hours north of Portland.

The game got off to a disastrous start with Sebastián Blanco suffering a right knee injury in the opening minutes. He would remain on the sidelines before bursting into tears and being carried off on a stretcher. Further examination of the injury will take place when the team gets back to Portland.

But, quickly the fortune was reversed when Diego Valeri found Eryk Williamson inside the box who converted the ball into the back of the net to give Portland the 1-0 lead.

However, Seattle would even the score in the 42nd minute when Kelvin Leerdam caught a rebound minutes before halftime.

The Timbers did not quit, though. The Sounders had 65% possession during the game but Portland took advantage of Sounders mistakes to get goals on the board.

In the 83rd minute, Williamson found Felipe Mora making a run who one-touched the ball past Sounders goalkeeper Stephen Frei. It was Mora's third consecutive game with a goal.

The goal ended up being the game-winner as the Timbers held onto the single goal advantage until the final whistle to leave the pitch victorious.

With the win, Portland has 14 points on the season and holds the fifth seed in the Western Conference.

Next up, Portland will travel to Los Angeles to play LAFC on Sunday, September 13 at 8:00 p.m. PT. in a rematch of their Group F matchup inside the Orlando bubble.
