Jeremy Ebobisse earns Team of the Week honors

Saturday night at Providence Park was a momentous night in many ways.

First, the Timbers welcomed a crowd of 23,255 fans – the largest crowd to attend a sporting event in Oregon since the Timbers played Nashville SC on March 8, 2020.

Second, the Timbers ended their three-match winless streak - thanks to the solid play of Jeremy Ebobisse. Near the center circle, Yimmi Chara flicked the ball into the path of Ebobisse. Taking several touches to get himself near the top of the 18-yard box, Ebobisse put the ball onto his left foot, and fired it into the top left corner of the goal. The forward's game-winner in the 84th minute sealed the victory for the home squad.

That goal, however, wasn't without some history as well. It was the Timbers’ 300th goal scored by the club in MLS play at Providence Park.

“To be honest, I didn’t know it was the 300th goal, but it’s a goal that led to three points, and ultimately that’s what’s most important to me," Ebobisse explained after the game.

Along with it being the 300th goal scored at Providence Park in MLS play, Ebobisse’s goal was also his second in as many games and third in his past four. Moreover, he had 100 percent pass completion rate (16 passes).

The striker's solid play was recognized by the league Monday. Ebobisse was named to the bench of Major League Soccer’s Week 13 Team of the Week, his first of the season.

“It was important to get back at home and get a win …,” Ebobisse added after the game. “To come out with a clean sheet, that’s a big one for us. We haven’t had too many of those this year. For me to get a goal, as well, to keep a good rhythm going, that’s something I hope I can take some confidence from and the team can continue to win, because we’ve got a lot of games coming.”

The Timbers will turn to Ebobisse again Wednesday night, as Portland welcomes in LACF to Providence Park. In eight regular-season matches, Ebobisse has recorded four goals against LAFC, and scored in three consecutive matches against them in 2020 (July 23, Sept. 13, Oct. 18). His four regular-season goals against LAFC ranks as second-most by a single player in the league, just behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic (8).
