When Jeremy Ebobisse stepped on the pitch to play LAFC Sunday evening, he made his 75th consecutive appearance across all competitions, currently the longest active streak in the MLS.
Now, that streak may be in jeopardy.
Ebobisse had to leave the match in the 88th minute after suffering an apparent left leg injury following a mid-air collusion challenging a Dejan Jakovic header.
After laying on the pitch for a few minutes, Ebobisse would leave the game and be replaced with Jaroslaw Niezgoda in the 88th minute.
It was the second time during the game Ebobisse would remain on the pitch for an extended period of time, but unlike his fall in the fifth minute, Ebobisse did not continue playing after this mishap.
After the match, head coach Giovanni Savarese did not have an update on Ebobisse's status.
“Unfortunately, I need more information. Right now, I don’t have enough information to be able to provide. So I will have to wait and speak to the staff and understand exactly what is his condition right now. Unfortunately, at that moment he had to come out of the match. But I will find out a little bit more information later and we’ll present it. Hopefully, he’s doing very well.”
Savarese followed up the update detailing how special of a player Ebobisse has become for the Timbers franchise.
“He’s done a great job like every player in this team. I’m extremely proud of every player and the performance that everybody has put in and how much work they have put in to be able to be a strong team, a competitive team. And [Jeremy Ebobisse] definitely has been one of those players, like every other player, that has put a lot of work into it and he has shown well with goals. Credit to him, credit to the entire team because everyone is working very hard.”
If Ebobisse misses extended time, it'll be the second integral offensive piece for Portland to suffer a significant injury this season after Sebastiàn Blanco tore his ACL.
Ebobisse leads Portland with eight goals this season.
Next, Portland will have a chance to gain sole possession of first place in the Western Conference when they travel north to CenturyLink Field to play Seattle on Thursday, October 22nd at 7:30 p.m. PT.
