Entering Wednesday's match against the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Portland Timbers needed a win or a tie to clinch its spot in the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.
(A Real Salt Lake tie against San Jose would have clinched Portland a spot, as well.)
Well, the Timbers took care of business itself defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy Wednesday evening, 5-2 at Providence Park.
It's the fourth consecutive postseason appearance for the club and third under head coach Giovanni Savarese.
In Savarese's inaugural season as head coach, he led the Timbers to the 2018 MLS Cup where its season ended with a 2-0 defeat from Atlanta.
However, the Timbers have excelled in win-or-go-home games under Savarese who coached Portland to a Western Conference Championship in 2018 as a fifth seed and the MLS is Back Tournament Championship in Orlando this past summer.
“It's the quality of the whole group, the coaching staff and the players, all the sacrifice, all the energy to make this club bigger, and knowing that all happens on the field and that’s it," said Diego Valeri on his club's success in knockout matches following a 2-1 win over Philadelphia that advanced Portland to the MLS is Back Tournament Final.
"So, besides all the stuff around our environment, we are very focused on our job, to prepare every game and execute during the game."
The Timbers will likely not know what seed it is in the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs until Decision Day on November 8th.
