Portland Timbers decimated by LA Galaxy 4-1, fall below playoff line

The Portland Timbers continued its road woes Friday evening with a 4-1 loss to the LA Galaxy in the City of Angels, allowing goals in the 27th, 34th, 53rd and 56th minutes.

Giovanni Savarese felt his team controlled the first 30 minutes before it got off the rails.

"Today we had a team that played very well for 30 minutes and then we disappeared," he said. "We disappeared. We didn’t give the game what we needed and we lost against a team that I felt that we should have gotten points here, especially with the way we started.”

With the humiliating defeat, the Timbers fall below the red line with 19 points in the Western Conference, one point behind 7th seed Real Salt Lake.

In case you missed it, here is what you need to know.

Quote of the night

“I think today it was a weird game," said Diego Chara. "At the beginning of the game I think we played well, having the ball, creating opportunities to score. After we allowed the first goal to LA Galaxy, we started to lose the ball, playing in the wrong way, and the LA Galaxy took advantage of that. This year is a little bit tricky for us in the away games.”

Stat line of the match

The Timbers allowed 19 shots, but only six on target, leading to four goals conceded. Not a good percentage there for the Timbers.

Play of the night

Jeremy Ebobisse tied the game up in the 29th minute off an assist from Yimmi Chara and Diego Valeri.

The play was the tenth assist of Chara's career with strangely, eight of the ten coming against the Galaxy.
