Portland Timbers select Creighton's Diego Gutierrez to close 2021 MLS Superdraft

After trading its first pick and selecting Notre Dame midfielder Dawson McCartney, the Portland Timbers were not done yet.

Portland drafted Creighton forward Diego Gutierrez with the 70th overall pick of the 2021 MLS Superdraft.

Gutierrez transferred to Creighton in time for his senior season after playing for Nebraska-Omaha for three years, where he made 37 starts and recorded 10 goals and 13 assists. In just three seasons, Gutierrez moved into the top-10 in UNO history in assists (3rd), shots on goal (3rd), points (4th), shots (4th), game-winning goals (5th), and goals (7th) in school history.

In high school, he became Nebraska's all-time leading scorer (112) while also adding 43 assists. He scored 35 goals and nine assists during his senior campaign alone in which he led the Ralston High School Rams to the 2017 state tournament.

Safe to say, he's excited to get started in Portland.
