After trading its first-round pick for $100,000 of General Allocation Money, the Portland Timbers made its first selection of the 2021 MLS Superdraft Thursday afternoon selecting Dawson McCartney, a midfielder out of Dartmouth, with the 43rd overall pick.
The 6'1" senior was a two-time Second Team All-Ivy League selection (2018, 2019) and was named the 2017 Ivy League Rookie of the Year. In three seasons, McCartney made 43 appearances, 40 starts, and recorded eight goals and 14 assists.
In December 2020, McCartney announced he will transfer to Notre Dame to play his senior season for the coach who recruited him to Dartmouth, Chad Riley.
“We are excited to add Dawson to our team,” said Riley. “I have known Dawson for a long time and he will be a wonderful addition to our team on the field as well as off the field.”
The New Jersey native was Captain for U18 Philadelphia Union Academy before enrolling in college and participated in U.S. Soccer National Training Centers growing up.
