Everything you might have missed from the weekend...Awards Style!
A busy day
Saturday was a busy day for Northwest sports fans. The Trail Blazers hosted the Rockets, the Seahawks travelled to Dallas for a playoff game and the Ducks and Beavers got Pac-12 play started with the first of two Civil War Basketball games.
With all that going on, let's get you all caught up on the days happenings, award style.
MVP, Breakout Performance, Rookie of the Day, and Play of the Day from Saturday, January 5th for your Northwest sports teams...
MVP: Jusuf Nurkic, Trail Blazers
The Trail Blazers hosted the red hot Houston Rockets at Moda Center last night and Portland's center stepped and delivered another huge performance en route to the upset win.
After dropping one to the Thunder on Friday night, despite dishing out a season-high 30 assists, Portland followed up Friday’s game with 27 assists in the Blazers 110-101 win over the Houston Rockets.
Jusuf Nurkic led the charge offensively with 25 points to go along with his 15 rebounds and three assists. Nurkic has now scored 20+ points for the fifth time in the last six games, and for the 12th time overall this season.
Breakout Performance: Tres Tinkle, OSU Beavers
It was a highly enjoyable Civil War Basketball game in Eugene last night, with OSU running out to a large lead, only to have Oregon claw its way back in to it and even take over the lead by several points in the second half.
But Tres Tinkle would have none of that.
Tinkle has been steady for the Beavers throughout 13 games. The junior forward is averaging 19.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists a game but stepped it up in a big way against the Ducks dropping an impressive 28 points on 9-15 shooting, and shot 4-8 from three-point range.
Rookie of the Day: Louis King, Oregon Freshman
Despite the coming up short in their Civil War game against the Beavers, the Oregon Ducks may have found their new star in 6-foot-8 freshman forward Louis King.
King, a five-star recruit, lived up to expectations, reaching his first career double-double, establishing a new career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds.
With the loss of Bol Bol to injury, Oregon will need to reshape its identity as it rolls through Pac-12 play and has an eye on the NCAA tournament.
Play of the Day: Doug Baldwin, Seahawks
The Seahawks may have lost their NFL Playoff game in Dallas on Saturday, but that doesn't stop us from giving the Play of the Day award out to Doug Baldwin who made an amazing toe-dragging sideline catch.
Watch the catch here:
Baldwin finished the game with only 3 catches for 32 yards, in large part because Tyler Lockett (4 catches, 120 yards) carved up the Cowboys on some big plays. In the end, it wasn't enough as the Seahawks lost 24-22.
