The feud we love to hate: Damian Lillard vs. Patrick Beverley
The Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Clippers will face off tonight, bringing one of the best on-court rivalries to Portland.
Patrick Beverley will suit up for the Clippers tonight opposite of Blazers guard Damian Lillard and it’s bound to be a showdown we won’t soon forget.
There’s no denying the bad blood between these two players. So let’s take a look at where this on-court feud all began.
Lillard vs. Beverley Round I
Pat the Pest has been hounding Portland's star guard since the 2013-14 season when Beverley was a member of the Houston Rockets.
The rivalry started on March 9, 2014 when the Rockets trailed by two points with 15 seconds left on the clock. Beverley proceeded to plead with the refs, putting his hand on Lillard’s chest, and let’s just say Lillard didn’t like that. He pushed back at Beverley and a war of words ensued.
Portland retained possession, but the Rockets managed to grab the 118-113 win in OT.
Lillard discussed his displeasure with Beverley’s actions after the game, calling his antics “not basketball.”
Beverley responded to Lillard’s comments on SportsTalk 790 in Houston saying the Portland All-Star “whines” and Beverley was “not a big fan of that.”
Beverley and Lillard faced off again in the 2013-14 playoffs following the exchange of nasty comments.
Lillard had his way with Beverley in the six-game playoff series, averaging 25.5 points, 6.7 assists, and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 47 percent from the field.
He also delivered the final blow during Game 6, hitting a deep-three pointer at the buzzer, giving Portland a 99-98 win. The victory delivered the Blazers their first win in a postseason series since 2000.
The feud continues...
Another scuffle ensued between Lillard and Beverley during the 2016 season when Portland beat the Rockets 96-79 on February 6.
During the matchup, Lillard was navigating around a Meyers Leonard screen when Beverley poked the ball away. Both players dove for the ball and Beverley proceeded to smack Lillard on the head and chest, preventing him from getting up.
The two players had to be separated by players and coaches. Beverley drew a technical foul for shoving Leonard moments later.
Lillard and Beverley exchange shots...again
Beverley suited up in a Clippers uniform for the first time during the 2017-18 season, but he was up to his usual tactics.
In a preseason game vs. Los Angeles on October 8, Lillard dove to the floor for a loose ball when Beverley pounced on him. The two rough-and-tumbled until Lillard was able to free his arms from the melee.
Beverley underwent right knee surgery on November 22, according to reports. He missed the remainder of the season, including the March 30 meeting between Portland and LA.
