First Round Foes – Why Blazers fans should want the Thunder
The ‘bad blood’ between these two will make it, oh so very, entertaining
If Sunday night’s altercation in the third quarter of the Blazers and Thunder showdown is any indication that these two teams are ready for the postseason and that these two teams may have some ‘bad blood’ between them—
Then, bring on the playoffs!!
The scuffle between the Blazers and Thunder, started when Ed Davis came down on Oklahoma City guard Terrance Feguson’s back in the third quarter. The two then got into a little shoving match as they fell to the ground and teammates from both sides came rushing to “help” in the fight. Four technical fouls were issued.
Imagine if these two teams got real familiar with each other in a seven-game playoff series? Can you say PLAYOFFS DRAMA? YES!
Plus, with the 108-105 win over the Thunder on March 25th, Portland earned its first season sweep of OKC since the 2002-03 season when this Thunder team was still in Seattle and people were enjoying the I-5 rivalry against the Supersonics.
Who doesn’t like watching Lillard vs. Westbrook?
This season, Damian Lillard has helped his team take care of business against the Thunder, but not just in finding ways to score. Lillard has been able to find his teammates against Oklhaomoa City. The three-time All-Star is averaging 8.3 assists per game in the season series.
And did we mention, Lillard is also getting buckets vs. OKC? Lillard is averaging 26.6 points per contest vs. the Thunder, while Russell Westbrook is putting up 25.7 points vs. Portland.
Quick statistical lowdown
Point guard matchup…
Damian Lillard is averaging 26.6 points and 6.5 assists on the season.
Russell Westbrook is averaging 25.4 points and 10.2 assists.
Jusuf Nurkic is averaging 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds on the season.
Steven Adams is averaging 14.1 points and 9.0 rebounds.
Other players to watch…
Al-Farouq Aminu is averaging 9.6 points and 7.5 rebounds on the season.
Carmelo Anthony is averaging 16.5 points and 5.8 rebounds.
Paul George is averaging 21.7 points and 5.7 rebounds.
What is the local media saying about this potential postseason matchup?
“OKC is a three-ring circus and Westbrook always looks as if he’s on the verge of an eruption. It would be a tough series that could go seven games.
Don’t be fooled by Portland’s four-game sweep in the regular season. That means nothing in the playoffs. Two hyper competitive teams going at each other — it would be epic.”
-- This is why NBCS Northwest and Rip City Radio 620 host Dwight Jaynes would want to see the Blazers play the Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.
