Remembering the Trail Blazers 1977 Championship through photos
It was June 5, 1977, the most important and famous game in the history of the Trail Blazers.
A Game 6 battle in which Portland was victorious and became NBA champs for the one and only time in its 50-year history.
Over the years, the Portland Trail Blazers have shared the memorable photos by photographer Mike Lloyd and other’s that were snapped on the Trail Blazers beat the Philadelphia 76ers to take home the hardware.
Let's take a look back at some of our favorite photos from that celebratory day…
Entering the postseason the Trail Blazers held a 49-33 record good enough for a three-seed in the Western Conference.
Down 2-0 in the series against the Sixers, the Blazers stormed back and won both games at home to tie the series at two games apiece. They went back to Philly and defeated the 76ers in Game 5.
And then... it was the magical Game 6.
This Portland squad had terrific balance throughout the roster. All five starters finished in double figures in the Championship game.
The Enforcer, Maurice Lucas, averaged 38.5 minutes, 21.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game during the 1976-77 playoffs.
Bill Walton averaged 18.2 points per game, along with 15.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 39.7 minutes of action during the 1976-77 postseason.
Walton finished with 20 points and 20 rebounds in the title game.
And to think that this was Jack Ramsay’s first year as head coach!
Dr. Jack became the head coach of the Blazers in 1976. Before that year, Portland had not made the playoffs OR even put together a winning season.
How many champagne bottles do you think were used to pour on Dr. Jack?
The locker room celebration looked legendary, which is just how it should be.
One thing was certain:
BlazerMania was everywhere and well that day! Rip City Faithful have showed up for their team and they celebrated like rock stars once the final horn sounded in the Memorial Coliseum.
Did we mention BlazerMania?
This may be the all-time greatest photo out of all the postgame celebration pictures.
All the excitement and passion that radiate from these photos makes taken in Memorial Coliseum, make it even more thrilling to think about what a championship in Rip City could look like nowadays. How rocking would Moda Center get?
That would be one big party that’s for sure!
