Simons on thinking about playing with Dame and CJ: "I can't wait"
Just four days after the 2018 NBA draft, Trail Blazers President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey introduced the Blazers first-round pick Anfernee Simons to the Portland media.
It's obvious the 19-year-old is eager to get to work in Rip City. If you missed Monday's introductory press conference, here are the top quotes from the newest Trail Blazer.
How does Simons describe what was going through his mind on draft night after he had an emotional embrace with his mother?
“All the hard work I’ve put in throughout the years, all the crying and stuff, I’ve put in a lot of crying in. Just thinking back on that I got really emotional…
My dad was real tough on me. It was kind of tough on me in the beginning. Since like five-years-old he has been tough on me. Just thinking back on all that stuff it just made me emotional.”
What style of play does Simons believe he will bring to the Blazers?
“I see myself as a guy that can score the ball and be able to do multiple things on the court—score, pass, play defense—
I feel like I can do those the best.”
What does Simons think will be the biggest obstacle ahead as a rookie?
“Getting used to an 82-game season, the wear and tear on your body, I feel like that’s going to be the most tough thing…
And, probably the travel.”
What does Simons think about when envisioning playing with Dame and CJ for the first time in practice?
“It’s going to be really exciting. I can’t wait for that day.
It’s going to be pretty exciting for me, going out there being able to compete with them and play with them.”
Is Simons closest with his dad in his family or is that just a basketball thing between the two of them?
“It’s just a basketball thing. I probably talk to my mom more, but my dad-- we are always together, doing basketball and stuff. He’s going to be here with me full-time, so we are going to get real close.”
