Welcome to RipCity, Seth Curry and Nik Stauskas
Relive the best quotes from Friday morning's introductory press conference with Portland Trail Blazers general manager Neil Olshey, guards Seth Curry and Nik Stauskas, and head coach Terry Stotts.
Olshey on Seth Curry
"Seth’s game speaks for itself; his ability to handle, pass, play without the ball, make threes. They are both elite shooters. We really felt like in the second unit trying to upgrade that adding more floor spacing, guys with high IQ’s that can make good decisions with the basketball, that fit in seamlessly with Evan Turner’s ability to facilitate; guys that can play with or behind Dame (Damian Lillard) and CJ (McCollum).
At this point, we wanted to make sure that we secure players that we know that will fit into our system, that can translate immediately in terms of skillset that can produce on the court, and then continue to go about our job in terms of the rest of the offseason."
Curry has "something to prove"
“I feel like I can fit in well. It’s one of my favorite offenses to watch for a long time. The way they play motion offense, a lot of guys touching the ball, a lot of guys getting the ball off whether it’s moving without the ball, playing pick-and-roll, things like that. I think with my skillset I can make it easier on a lot of guys they have on the team, to be able to spread the floor, play the one or the two, with or without the ball. I’m just looking forward to another opportunity to come in and make my mark again.”
Olshey on Stauskas
"These are guys we’ve liked for awhile. With Nik (Stauskas) we really went back to our college scouting, trying to find guys not just similar to what we did with Moe Harkless, Shabazz (Napier), trying to identify guys that were high at one point and wanted to get back into a fold where we can put them where they can maximize the things I identified earlier in their career that we felt gave them high potential upside."
Stauskas reflects on defending Dame, CJ
“I think this offense is great for both of us. Getting a chance to guard guys like Dame and CJ the last couple years, you start realizing the tough positions this offense put you in as a defensive player. The amount of flares that they have here, obviously they value shooting, and that’s something I feel like I can do well.
Also, seeing the success that Shabazz and Pat (Connaughton) had last year coming off the bench, for me, that made me feel more confident in making my decision. And seeing both of those guys leave, for me I feel like I have an opportunity to come in here and make a difference with that second unit, so it’s going to be important for me to come in here and earn those minutes from day one.”
Stotts on improving second unit with Curry, Stauskas
“What they give offensively is pretty obvious with their ability to handle, to shoot, to make plays, to help out in the second unit. Losing Shabazz and Pat, obviously that left 38 minutes for these two guys to hopefully get. But their game speaks for itself and I think it’s a great opportunity for both of them and certainly it’s a great opportunity for us."
