Ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, the Seattle Seahawks bolstered their pass rush in acquiring defensive end Carlos Dunlap from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Seattle has yet to confirm details of the trade, but according to multiple reports, the Bengals will receive offensive lineman BJ Finney and a 2021 seventh-round pick in exchange for Dunlap.

This was a much-needed move for the Seahawks after the defense failed to register a single quarterback hit against Kyler Murray in their Week 7 loss at Arizona. Furthermore, Seattle was desperate for reinforcements with Bruce Irvin out for the season with a torn ACL and second-round pick Darrell Taylor still at least a week away from returning to practice, as Pete Carroll noted on 710 ESPN Seattle Monday.

The Seahawks are optimistic that a change in scenery might do the 31-year-old pass rusher some good. After making the Pro Bowl in back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016, Dunlap’s role was reduced this season from 71 snaps in Week 3 to 66 combined over the last three games.

He wasn’t shy about his discontentment on social media. Dunlap even went as far as to put his house up for sale after fighting with the Bengals. The tweet has since been deleted, but this was the context.

“6000 sqft city view with huge balcony. 4 bedroom. 4.5 bathroom. In one of the best school districts for sale. Do your market analysis and make me offer. Serious inquiries only with proof of funds! Owner is willing to sell furnished or unfurnished!” Dunlap wrote.

Furthermore, he shared a photo on his Instagram story of the Bengals’ depth chart with himself as third string with the words “I don’t got time for this.” That post has also been deleted.

After the trade was finalized on Wednesday morning, Dunlap took to his Instagram Stories to show he wasn’t leaving Cincinnati without all of his items, including his team-issued parking spot.

“Took me years to earn this 1st parking spot and I don’t regret not one of them…. Years=A Decade of Service,” he said in the post.

One of the Seahawks glaring weaknesses for the past two seasons has been in the sacks department. Seattle traded for star pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney in 2019, but still produced just 28.0 sacks as a team. Through six games, the Seahawks have just 9.0 sacks and are on pace to produce 24.0 sacks on the year.

The 10-year veteran has one of the most reliable track records in terms of sacks. He is Cincinnati’s all-time sacks leader with 82.5 sacks in 11 seasons. During his two Pro Bowl years, Dunlap notched 13.5 sacks during his first selection in 2015 and 8.0 sacks and 15 pass deflections in 2016.

In 2019, he has 9.0 sacks, doubling that of Rasheem Green, Seattle’s sack leader last season who had just 4.0. sacks.

When he’s not on the field feasting on quarterbacks, Dunlap is serving up some delicious eats in the Miami area. Dunlap, who went to college at Florida, opened up a fast-casual restaurant in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami called “Honey Uninhibited.”

The restaurant’s slogan is “brunch, breakfast and booze,” and features a plethora of egg benedicts, French toasts and soul-food picks like shrimp and grits.

Like many of the players and staff on the Seattle Seahawks, Dunlap is not afraid to talk about the uncomfortable realities of systemic racism and oppression.

In an interview with Bengals.com senior writer Geoff Hobson, Dunlap described a moment over the summer where he and a group of about five Black NFL players were discriminated against while participating in an offseason workout in Fort Lauderdale. Dunlap said the Black NFL players were tossed out of the field by a park ranger while he proceeded to let a group of white NFL players continued their drills.

"It was very frustrating because it was the day after a lot of this stuff had been happening," Dunlap said. "It was during the protests. It was all over all media and for us to be singled-out, we were compelled to speak out so we asked them, 'Why did you demand that we leave the field and go to another field when we explained that we were almost done, literally five-10 minutes, versus the other group that was able to finish the workout?' And he pretty much watched and damn-near cheered them on."
