It was announced Wednesday that Seattle Storm point guard and basketball superstar Sue Bird will be a flag-bearer for the United States as will Marlins infielder Eddy Alvarez.

Bird, who will be participating in her fifth Summer Olympics and looking for her fifth consecutive gold with the U.S. women’s basketball team, will join Alvarez, an infielder on the U.S. baseball team and silver medal winner in speed skating, to lead the United States during the Parade of Nations at the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics this Friday.

It was Bird’s former UConn teammates and longtime friend and Team USA teammate Diana Taurasi who made the exciting announcement to Team USA.

The basketball world couldn’t be happier to see Bird hold the flag bearer honors at the Opening Tokyo Olympics Ceremony.
