Other candidates include:

  • Sam Cassell (+400)
  • Dave Joerger (+500)
  • Juwan Howard (+500)
  • David Vanterpool (+700)
  • Jeff Van Gundy (+700)
  • Kenny Atkinson (+1000)
  • Mike D'Antoni (+1000)
  • Becky Hammon (+1000)

However, it appears the Blazers are not the only team looking to hire Billups.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Boston Celtics want a second interview with Billups, along with Brooklyn's Ime Udoka and Milwaukee's Darvin Ham.

Woj adds "Billups is a prominent candidate in the Blazers' search."

Billups leading the race aligns with the belief around the league that the Portland job is his to lose, between him appearing on both the leaked candidate list from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Damian Lillard's preferred list that he told Jason Quick of The Athletic on the record.

Last week, John Hollinger of The Athletic wrote Billups "is the likely choice" per league sources.

As a 17-year NBA veteran, Billups is a guy who’s respected for his leadership skills and played a role in reviving the Detroit Pistons, which included a championship and seven straight Eastern Conference Finals appearances; helping the Denver Nuggets make the Western Conference finals in 2009 after a 24-year absence; helped the New York Knicks make the playoffs in 2011 for the first time in six years.

Now, he's on the sidelines for the Western Conference favorite Clippers.

However, considering Neil Olshey said Monday the Blazers will be doing "biographical and impact studies" on all of their candidates, the franchise will need to address one dark part of his past.

When Billups was a rookie with the Boston Celtics in 1997, a woman accused Billups and Ron Mercer of rape at the home of Antoine Walker. Billups and Mercer settled the lawsuit with the unidentified woman, paying her an undisclosed amount out of court.

It appears to be his job to lose.
