Portland Trail Blazers Anfernee Simons and Damian Lillard were fairly busy during the 2021 NBA All-Star weekend.
Lillard showcased his scoring ability and range coming off the bench for LeBron’s team, and Simons took home the trophy for slam dunk competition.
And Lillard actually had something to do with Simons final dunk that won him the whole thing.
Simons last dunk had him leaning in to kiss the rim before finishing with a slam.
In an article by the Athletic’s Jason Quick, Simons reveals that he actually never attempted it in practice before the competition.
“In practice, I’ve never actually kissed the rim, but I was like, ‘I’ve got to commit to it,’” Simons said. “So I tried to put a mouthpiece in at the last minute, but it didn’t fit my mouth, so I scratched it and emphasized the smooch face so people know I’m right there next to the rim and I’m trying to kiss it.”
Just before Simons went on to try and beat Knicks rookie Obi Toppin, he turned to Lillard and asked for some advice on what to do.
And it was actually Lillard who suggested that Simons do the kiss-themed dunk to go for the win.
“I told him, ‘If you do the kiss dunk — I’ve never seen nobody do that,'” Lillard said.
Of course, Lillard had to take credit for the final dunk and the win.
Simons has been getting advice from Lillard since the day he was drafted by the Blazers.
It is safe to say when Lillard gives out advice, good things keep going his way.
