Rip City was rejoicing in the idea of current Miami Heat head coach and Portland native Erik Spoelstra potentially returning to PDX to be the Trail Blazers next head coach.
Social media was abuzz Tuesday morning as the rumor started to spread like wildfire that Portland was interested in Spoelstra’s services.
Ethan Skolnick of Five Reasons Sports Network tweeted out Tuesday morning:
"We have multiple sources saying Erik Spoelstra’s name has been discussed internally in Portland regarding their coach opening… & more.
We are NOT reporting contact has been made, or that Spoelstra has any intention of leaving Miami."
That tweet has since been deleted.
Of course, the two-time championship head coach has deep ties to the state of Oregon, but that doesn’t mean a return is on the horizon.
And now Rip City can put their dreams of having Spo on the sidelines in Portland to rest.
At least for now.
Trail Blazers radio play-by-play announcer Travis Demers is reporting that the rumors involving Spoelstra and the Blazers “are dead.”
As the coaching search continues, we are sure there will be plenty more rumors out there.
For now, Blazers fans will continue to appreciate what Spo has built in Miami.
