As Jusuf Nurkic took the court on Monday night vs. the Houston Rockets, something weighed heavy on his heart.
It was the birthday of his grandmother, Hana, who passed last August due to COVID-19. Nurkic found out on the bus ride to the Blazers first play-in game vs. the Memphis Grizzlies inside the NBA Bubble.
While time has passed since Hana’s passing, grief doesn’t magically go away at a certain point, and birthdays can hit especially hard. For Nurkic, he made sure Hana felt his love when he suited up and stepped on the hardwood. She would have been 70 on Monday.
“Today is the day grandma, love you,” Nurkic said. “Thank you for everything.”
Nurkic honored his grandmother on her birthday through his efforts on the court in the Blazers 140-129 victory. The Bosnian Beast impacted the game by scoring 22 points and grabbing 6 rebounds and 5 assists in 29 minutes.
After the game, he took to Twitter to deliver this special message that will bring you to tears.
“We got win. HBD grandma,” Nurkic tweeted.”
Yes, yes you did, Nurk, and what a beautiful tribute.
