Portland Trail Blazers fans have been showing their excitement all over social media about the addition of big man Larry Nance Jr.
And it seems the 28-year-old is just as excited to be part of Rip City.
Nance Jr. caught up with Trail Blazers beat reporter Casey Holdahl to discuss his thoughts on playing alongside Damian Lillard and much more.
While Nance Jr. hasn’t made his way to Portland just yet, he gave Holdahl some insight on his initial thoughts on how elated he is for the chance to play for the Blazers.
“I felt it was an opportunity where I really have a chance to step in and make a difference,” Nance Jr. added. “This is a team that’s been on the edge of something special for a while now and the higher ups in the organization deemed me as someone that could help them get higher. I’m thrilled at the opportunity and I’m really looking forward to taking it. Getting a chance to play with players of this caliber doesn’t come around too often.”
Portland officially acquired Larry Nance Jr. in a three-team trade on Aug. 28. He had spent the last 3.5 seasons with the Cavaliers and averaged 9.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists over 35 games a season ago. The Cleveland, Ohio native missed part of last season due to a fractured thumb.
Nance Jr. has a vision of what he could bring to the team, particularly helping out Lillard and McCollum to take pressure off those two in the offensive end.
“It kind of hit me over the past few years watching the playoffs and watching the guys that really step up and shine in the playoffs, guys that you can’t take off the court,” Nance Jr explained.
“I fit that mold to a ’T.’ I’m sitting there watching PJ Tucker become a cult hero in Milwaukee and Bobby Portis, even a guy like Aaron Gordon or Torrey Craig kind of shinning in their roles and that type of stuff in the playoffs where they’re a versatile defender, can switch, knock down shots, can do a little bit of everything. I consider myself among that mold, I’m ready to show it.”
Nance Jr. and the rest of the Trail Blazers will tip-off training camp on Sept. 28.
