Report: Carmelo Anthony 'waiting on a call' from Lakers when free agency begins

Trail Blazers

Carmelo Anthony’s future with the Blazers seems unknown.

The team is entering a period where changes need to be made to propel them into contention and satisfy Damian Lillard. Is re-signing Anthony a move that’ll bring the team in the direction of a championship? That’s something the team would have to contemplate.

If the team were to show little or no interest in the 10-time All-Star, a team that was a looming possibility for a few years and could be in the mix again is the Lakers.

Heading to Los Angeles and reuniting with former teammate Russell Westbrook and teenage-friend LeBron James could be appealing to Anthony. Especially since the Lakers are closer to winning a championship with Westbrook, James, and Anthony Davis than the Blazers.

This could be the best and only opportunity for Anthony and James to be teammates outside of the Olympics and All-Star Games. A pairing nobody would be surprised if it happens and if the two have seriously talked about it once their seasons ended.

Anthony’s role with the Lakers would be akin to his this past season with Portland. Coming off the bench and being asked to score. The 18-year veteran was a reserve for 66 of the team’s 69 games, averaging 13.4 points on a career-high 40.9% from the three-point line.

Brad Turner of the LA Times reports Anthony is interested in joining the Lakers and expects a call from the team when free agency commences on Monday.
