Trail Blazers' film session was 'instructive and necessary' Thursday in Denver

The Trail Blazers and Nuggets square off once again in Friday's preseason finale before Portland welcomes in the Utah Jazz to tip-off the regular season on Dec. 23.

Following Wednesday’s blowout loss to the Nuggets after allowing Denver to score 41 in the first quarter, the Blazers took Thursday to sit down and dissect game film and walk-through defensive principles as CJ McCollum noted at Ball Arena Thursday night.

“Practice went well, just more so tightening up some of our defensive principles and concepts and rotations – taking advantage of practice, obviously we haven’t had that many practices,” McCollum said.

Both McCollum and Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts discussed how important Thursday’s film session was heading into their final tune-up.

The film session went well. Obviously, you watched the game, we had a lot of breakdowns, a lot of stuff we need to improve upon. New bodies out there, new schemes, so just kind of getting used to rotations.

The film session was instructive and necessary. The reception was good and I thought we got a lot accomplished on the floor. It wasn’t physically taxing, but we went through a lot of things that we needed to go through at the defense end.

“I thought it was very productive and look forward to tomorrow,” McCollum added.

Friday’s game will be a good test to see how quickly this team can learn and respond from its defensive lapses and mistakes as the 2020-21 regular season draws near.

And now we know for McCollum, it’s a positive playing in the Mile High City.

“Yeah, it’s different,” McCollum said of performing at the high altitude. “It’s good though to be able to play through it. You could tell for a few minutes, your wind isn’t the same and then you kind of recover from there. I like playing in it. I like working out in it, it gets you ready faster.”

Which is just what the Trail Blazers need in this shortened training camp.
