The Portland Trail Blazers dropped their final preliminary Las Vegas Summer League game on Saturday to the Phoenix Suns, 79-70.
It was Portland's second consecutive Summer League loss as the Blazers finished the first four games with an overall 2-2 record. Portland will play a fifth and final game at a time and date still to be determined.
In Saturday’s loss, it was a game of runs, especially in the second half.
The Blazers led by 11 midway through the third quarter, but the Suns didn't roll over. Phoenix went on an 18-2 run and Portland couldn't recover.
NBA veteran Michael Beasley led the way in the loss with 14 points while Emmanuel Mudiay made sure to find his teammates as he finished with a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists.
“Defense was working for us early on in the second half,” Mudiay said postgame. “But I don’t know – we just kind of got too complacent, we got too comfortable and I think that’s when they made their run, and they jumped on us and made a comeback and we couldn’t recover from there.”
Blazers second-year guard CJ Elleby, who has struggled to find a rhythm in Summer League, finished with six points and four rebounds while also committing three turnovers. Rookie center Trendon Watford, who signed a two-way contract with the Blazers this summer, notched nine points and seven rebounds.
For the Suns, last year’s No. 10 overall pick Jalen Smith led the way with 17 points.
The year’s Summer League featured all 30 NBA teams playing four games with the two teams with the best records from the first four games meeting in the Championship Game on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
All 30 teams are guaranteed five games. The date and time of the Trail Blazers fifth Summer League is still to be determined.
