With the Portland Trail Blazers tipping off training camp on Sept. 28, Portland will reportedly sign free agent guard Dennis Smith Jr. to a training camp deal, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Smith Jr. last played for the Detroit Pistons after being traded from the New York Knicks last season.
With Detroit in 23 games, Smith Jr. averaged 7.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists.
The Dallas Mavericks selected Smith Jr. No. 9 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft.
During his rookie season, he averaged 15.2 points and 5.2 assists in 69 games played for Dallas while also being named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. But the following season the Mavs traded him to the Knicks in the deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas. Since then, the now 23-year-old has been trying to find a fresh start.
