Former Oregon star Sabrina Ionescu unveils first shoe for Nike's 'Greater Than' series

Young girls all over the world look up to Sabrina Ionescu.

Before she turned pro, she was coined the “triple double queen” for becoming the NCAA’s all-time leader in triple doubles. The then WNBA prodigy also became the only Division I player to record 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds.

Now, the No. 1 overall pick by the New York Liberty in 2020, is teaming up with fellow Duck Phil Knight to release her own sneaker series with Nike.

She is the face of Nike’s new Air Zoom GT Cut which is the first shoe in Nike’s “Greater Than” franchise.

“For the Space Makers like you and me,” Ionescu said in an announcement on Instagram. “The new Air Zoom GT Cut. Coming soon!”

Along with Ionescu, Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox will headline the shoe series. When speaking with the Undefeated about the Nike collaboration, the New York Liberty guard revealed she has been working on the design of the shoe since her senior year at Oregon.

“Being the headliner for the GT Cut is an honor because of how much insight I’ve been giving on the shoes they’ve been creating,” Ionescu said. “Also, just the learning process to figure out what I like, what helps me as a basketball player and what’s going to help other people that are looking to find a shoe as well.”

Ionescu said tailoring a shoe to be comfortable and low to the ground were of utmost importance. The GT Cut’s design was built with the idea of unlocking comfort, responsiveness and sensations for athletes to perform at the highest level.

“You’re able to jump, you’re able to run and having all of that in one – and not sacrificing one for the others,” Ionescu noted. “That was a huge thing that I had said.”

The 23-year-old will debut the GT Cut in the shoe’s launch colorways as well as player-exclusive versions. Ionescu will of course wear a pair featuring New York Liberty seafoam green, black and white, as well as green and yellow kicks to represent the Ducks.

But while Sabrina will have a shoe of her own, she still plans to channel her late friend, NBA legend Kobe Bryant on the court.

“I’ll definitely still be wearing some Kobes at times as well,” she said. “That’s something that I really respect of Nike, being able to understand that I still want to rock those and pay tribute to him and Gigi with the shoes that I wear.”

Now all of the budding young athletes looking to be like Sabrina can wear her shoes and channel the WNBA superstar. The Air Zoom GT Cut drops Thursday, April 1 in Greater China and late April in North America.
