Andrew Bogut says his chances of playing in Rio Olympics ‘not looking good’

2016 NBA Finals - Game Five

OAKLAND, CA - JUNE 13: Andrew Bogut #12 of the Golden State Warriors is assisted off the court after sustaining an injury during the third quarter against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals at ORACLE Arena on June 13, 2016 in Oakland, California. Andrew Bogut met with the media for the first time since being ruled out of the NBA Finals with a knee injury, and was asked about his chances of playing in the Rio Games for Australia.

“I want to play in the Olympics if I can,” he said. “I’ll try to do everything I can rehab-wise, but the time frame for the injuries that I have makes it very unlikely right now.”

The Golden State Warriors’ center collided with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ J.R. Smith on Monday. The team announced Wednesday that he’ll miss the rest of the Finals, but won’t need surgery. He was told the recovery time would be six to eight weeks.

“I’m not great at math, but six to eight weeks is what I’ve been told. It’s very unlikely at this point, to be honest. I’m going to re-evaluate it in a month. If a miracle happens and I feel great in a month and I can get back on the court, we’ll see. But as of now it’s not looking good,” he said.

Six weeks from Monday is July 25, eight weeks from Monday is Aug. 8, and Australia’s first game is Aug. 6.

“With no practice games, no training sessions to go into an Olympic Games, [that] probably isn’t a good thing for anybody,” Bogut said. “But if it gets to that and it’s available to happen, we’ll discuss it at that point.”

Bogut suited up for Australia in the 2004 and 2008 Games, but missed the 2012 London Olympics after having ankle surgery the previous spring. The Australian men’s basketball team is likely to be led by NBA players Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova. It will not feature 19-year-old Ben Simmons, who is expected to be one of the top picks in this month’s NBA Draft.

“I’ll probably know about a month from now,” Bogut said.
