Bode Miller concerned, hopeful for season debut this week

Bode Miller

Bode Miller is hopeful of competing for the first time this season this weekend, but said his fitness was a concern following a downhill training run in Wengen, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

Miller finished 27th in the first of three scheduled downhill training runs before this weekend’s races, 3.07 seconds behind leader and Olympic champion Matthias Mayer. The downhill event is Saturday.

“It felt bad, but that’s what I was expecting,” said Miller, a 37-year-old six-time Olympic medalist who is returning from November back surgery. “This is a tough race to come into for your first race of the season. Physically, this is probably the most demanding course of the year.”

Miller said it was hard to be specific with expectations.

“I’d love to try to be competitive here and ski an aggressive run, but I think fitness is what I’m most concerned with, and I can’t really take risks there,” Miller said. “I just have no energy for the last turns.”
