Doctors have not cleared Evan Lysacek to attempt quadruple jumps yet, but the Olympic figure skating champion said he has been doing triple jumps in practice as he attempts to return from a hip injury.

He made the comments to The Associated Press two days after saying he was back to “light training.”

Lysacek, 28, hasn’t competed since his 2010 Olympic title. He suffered a torn labrum in his left hip falling on a quad in training Aug. 21, forcing him to withdraw from Skate America, which was two weeks ago.

Lysacek must post a minimum score (one he can achieve without a quad) in an international competition before the U.S. Championships (Jan. 9-12) to be eligible for the Sochi Olympics. The two-man U.S. team will be named after the U.S. Championships in Boston.
