The match-up of Olympic unbeatens Great Britain and the United States was decidedly defensive until very late.

In what could be a gold medal preview, Michelle Vitesse’s 39th minute goal gave the Americans the first goal of the game but the British scored twice late to win 2-1.

U.S. goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer Briggs kept up her outstanding tournament, too, only to be beaten on a terrific bit of passing that culminated with Sophie Bray redirecting Hannah McLeod’s pass home with under 8 minutes to play.

Alexandra Danson scored on a long shot through traffic moments later, and Great Britain had a surprising 2-1 lead.

The Americans start the quarterfinals against the fourth-placed team in Group A on Monday.
