Laurie Hernandez makes ‘Dancing with the Stars’ finals after tearful, perfect score
After her grandmother recently passed away, Laurie Hernandez was in tears during her “Dancing with the Stars” foxtrot on Monday night.
“That was the most amazing display of courage that I’ve seen in 23 seasons,” host Tom Bergeron said.
Hernandez and partner Val Chmerkovskiy received their fourth and fifth straight perfect scores to advance to the four-couple finals next Monday.
Before the dance, a feature package aired showing Hernandez talking to grandmother Brunilda Hernandez, who suffered from Alzheimer’s. Watch it at the 38-minute mark of the episode. ABC said Brunilda Hernandez died a day after Laurie was interviewed for the piece.
“I kind of look at dance as a way to express my emotions and feelings,” Hernandez said afterward. “Instead of just having to say anything, I was just able to dance my way through it. It was kind of like a way for me to let it go.”
Hernandez is joined in the finals by former NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson, IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe and country singer and actress Jana Kramer.
