Ted Ligety, who captured Olympic, World and World Cup giant slalom titles the last two years, looks to deliver the first U.S. gold medal of the World Championships in his trademark event Friday, live on NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra.

Ligety has even more on the line. He can become the first man to win three straight World Championships in the giant slalom and pass Lindsey Vonn for the most career World Championships medals among Americans with his seventh.

But Ligety must make up ground after finishing fifth in the first of two runs Friday morning. He goes into the final afternoon run trailing Austrian leader Marcel Hirscher by .24.

Hirscher, the three-time reigning World Cup overall champion, already owns two gold medals from these World Championships. Hirscher is this season’s World Cup giant slalom leader.

The World Championships continue with the women’s slalom, featuring Olympic and World champion Mikaela Shiffrin, on Saturday.
