Michael Phelps fastest in 200m IM prelims at Santa Clara

Michael Phelps was the fastest qualifier into the 200m individual medley final, his last of four events at the Santa Clara Grand Prix, on Sunday.

Phelps clocked 2 minutes, .89 seconds and won his heat comfortably by 1.2 seconds in his first time racing the event since winning the 2012 Olympic title in 1:54.27.

The 22-time Olympic medalist is in the third meet of his comeback after taking 20 months off following the London Games.

Earlier this weekend, Phelps tied for a win in the 100m butterfly and finished second in the 100m freestyle and 200m free at the meet, his busiest since unretiring.

Also Sunday, Missy Franklin was second in her 100m backstroke heat to qualify for the final. Franklin, the Olympic and World champion in the event, opted not to swim the 200m IM that she had originally entered.

The finals session begins at 8 p.m. ET and will air on Universal Sports and

U.S. swimmers are preparing for the summer’s two biggest meets, the U.S. Championships and the Pan Pacific Championships in August.
