Oscar Pistorius’ Nike contract terminated

Oscar Pistorius

South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius (C) leaves the High Court in Pretoria on September 12, 2014 after the verdict was handed down in his murder trial where he was found guilty of culpable homicide. Oscar Pistorius was on found guilty of culpable homicide on September 12 and faced a potential lengthy jail term for shooting dead his glamorous girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013, in a case that shattered the Paralympian hero’s glittering career. Pistorius was acquitted of a more serious charge of murder, but South African Judge Thokozile Masipa said that he had acted “negligently” in killing the blonde law graduate, named as one of the world’s 100 sexiest women. Nike terminated its contract with Oscar Pistorius, a company spokesman confirmed Saturday, one day after Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide in killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year.

Pistorius, the first double amputee to run in the Olympics in 2012, shot and killed Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013, saying he thought she was an intruder locked behind a bathroom door.

“Nike extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to all families concerned following this tragic incident,” the company said in a Feb. 14, 2013 statement. “As it is a police matter, Nike will not comment further at this time.”

Prosecutors charged Pistorius with premeditated murder on Feb. 15, which he ultimately was found not guilty of. Nike suspended its contract with the runner six days after the shooting.

“We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely,” Nike said in a statement on Feb. 20, 2013.

Pistorius will return to court Oct. 13 for sentencing. He could face up to 15 years in prison for culpable homicide, plus punishment for firing a gun in a restaurant in January 2013.
