FIFA president Sepp Blatter said “consultations” are starting on moving the 2022 Qatar World Cup to the winter, but that it won’t overlap with the 2022 Olympics.
“It can only be done in November-December, not January-February,” Blatter told reporters in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Friday, according to Agence France-Presse.
Blatter is also an International Olympic Committee member. Earlier this week, winter sports federations expressed concern about a possible World Cup in November.
Potential host cities for the 2022 Olympics must submit bids by Thursday to the International Olympic Committee. So far, the following cities have said they will bid or officially bid:
Almaty, Kazakhstan
Beijing/Zhangjiakou, China
Krakow, Poland/Jasna, Slovakia
Lviv, Ukraine
Oslo, Norway
Munich will decide if it will bid Sunday, and Stockholm hopes to announce its decision by Tuesday, according to Inside the Games.
