Shaun White‘s return to slopestyle couldn’t have gone much worse.
The two-time Olympic halfpipe champion fell on the first rail on both of his runs at the Burton U.S. Open on Friday, finishing 31st out of 31 riders with a top score of 6.10 points.
“I don’t ever want to look at [that rail] again,” said White, who jokingly raised his arms and pumped his fist after falling. “I was rusty on my rails. It’s been a while since I’ve been in the slope. I know where I need to focus now. ... Pretty frustrated right now.”
White, 29, competed in slopestyle for the first time since he pulled out of the Sochi Olympic slopestyle on the eve of the competition, citing injury risk on a modified course.
On Thursday, White qualified first into the U.S. Open halfpipe final that will take place Saturday.
