The first day of Paralympic action includes Alpine skiing’s marquee downhill events.
The U.S. is led by five-time Paralympic medalist Alana Nichols, the first American woman to win gold medals in the summer (wheelchair basketball) and winter.
Nichols will try to repeat as downhill sitting champion, while seven-time Paralympian Allison Jones and Danelle Umstead, who is guided by her husband in the visually impaired races, are also competing Saturday.
On the men’s side, watch out for Austrian Matthias Lanzinger, a former able-bodied skier who made a World Cup podium before he had his left leg amputated after a crash.
