Synchronized swimming: Alvarez, Koroleva finish ninth in preliminary duets free routine

Team USA’s Anita Alvarez and Mariya Koroleva scored a 86.43 in preliminary action of duets free routine on Sunday as the U.S. opened synchronized swimming at the Rio Olympics.

That was good for ninth place out of 24 teams, 11.63 points behind leaders Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina of Russia.

The final is Tuesday.
