Thomas Bach to visit Sochi for first time as IOC president

Newly elected International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will get his first look at the site of the 2014 Olympics in his new role later this month.

Bach, voted to succeed Jacques Rogge on Sept. 10, will attend the Sport and Environment Conference in Sochi from Oct. 30-Nov. 1, according to The Associated Press.

The German is familiar with the Black Sea resort. He was the chairman of the IOC evaluation commission for the city’s bid to host the 2002 Winter Games. Sochi did not make the the cut of four finalists. Salt Lake City eventually won the right to host in a landslide.

Bach, 59 and a 1976 Olympic fencing champion, traveled to Greece for the beginning of the Olympic torch relay in Olympia on Sept. 29. There, he spoke about the Sochi Games to R-Sport.

The opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympics is Feb. 7, but competition begins Feb. 6.
