USA women’s volleyball sweeps Japan, on to Olympic semifinal in Rio

The United States women’s volleyball team is within one win of another gold medal match.

The Americans handled Japan, 3-0, on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals at the Olympics in Rio.

USA took the first set 25-16, and battled past a spirited Japan rally late in the second set to emerge with a 25-23 win. The third set was also tight, but the Yanks pulled out a 25-22 win.

The U.S. moves onto play the winner of Serbia and Russia on Friday. Earlier, Netherlands beat South Korea, and will face either Brazil or China in the other semi.

The U.S. lost to Brazil in the 2012 final.
